Where we mean
What's "the Kingdom"?
The Northeast Kingdom is Vermont's northeast corner: Caledonia, Essex and Orleans counties, tucked up against Quebec to the north and New Hampshire to the east. Senator George Aiken is credited with the name. In 1949 he reckoned country this pretty ought to be called a kingdom, and it stuck.
It's the most rural part of a rural state. You'll find dirt roads, dairy farms, sugarhouses and long lakes like Willoughby and Memphremagog, plus Jay Peak, Burke Mountain and the Kingdom Trails. Towns are small and far apart. That's why the diner, the general-store deli and the creemee window matter, and why it's worth knowing who's open before you drive.
