About the town

Derby, Vermont.

Derby is the most populous town in Orleans County and runs along the Quebec border, with Lake Memphremagog on its western edge and Lake Salem and Clyde Pond within its bounds. It includes two incorporated villages, Derby Center and Derby Line, plus several smaller settlements, and the busy U.S. Route 5 corridor toward Newport holds much of the area's shopping and dining.

Derby Line is famous for the Haskell Free Library and Opera House, which sits right on the international boundary with Stanstead, Quebec. In Derby Center, a granite monument put up in 1866 is considered the oldest community Civil War memorial in the country. Interstate 91 makes Derby easy to reach, and its lakes make it a good summer stop.
