About the town

Brownington, Vermont.

Brownington is a rural hill town in Orleans County, just south of Derby, with three small villages: Brownington, Brownington Center and Evansville. The Willoughby River crosses the southern part of town, and the high ground in the middle offers wide views over farms toward distant mountains.

The big draw is the Old Stone House Museum, a granite school dormitory built in 1836 by Alexander Twilight, the first African American to earn a college degree in the United States and to serve in a state legislature. The museum's historic village includes several restored buildings and walking trails, with tours from May through October. Pair a visit with lunch in nearby Barton, Orleans or Derby.
