About the town

Charleston, Vermont.

Charleston is a rural Orleans County town with two villages, East Charleston and West Charleston, both strung along Vermont Route 105 as it follows the Clyde River between Derby and Island Pond. The river winds slowly through much of the town, then drops over a series of falls in the western part of town.

Echo Lake, near East Charleston, is the town's best-known water: a deep lake with a state fishing access and boat launch, named for the way sounds bounce around its shores. Smaller ponds, woods and farms fill out the landscape, making it good country for paddling, fishing and fall drives. For a sit-down meal, Derby and Newport are a short drive west.
