About the town

Wheelock, Vermont.

Wheelock is a quiet, wooded town in northwestern Caledonia County, bordered by Sheffield, Sutton, Lyndon, Danville, Stannard and Greensboro. Interstate 91 cuts through its valley, but the small village still feels tucked away, with a white town hall, a village store and a handful of homes. Wheelock Mountain is the highest point in town.

The town takes its name from Eleazar Wheelock, founder of Dartmouth College, and that link comes with an unusual perk: under an arrangement dating to around 1830, a full-time Wheelock resident admitted to Dartmouth can attend tuition free. It is a place for back road drives and fall color rather than dining, with Lyndonville and St. Johnsbury the nearest bigger towns.
