About the town

Waterford, Vermont.

Waterford lies on the Connecticut River in eastern Caledonia County, just south of St. Johnsbury and across the water from New Hampshire. Interstates 91 and 93 meet in the western corner of town, yet most of Waterford stays quiet, with farms, woods and broad views over Moore Reservoir, a dammed stretch of the river that covered the old village of Upper Waterford.

The best known spot is Lower Waterford, nicknamed the White Village. In the 1930s a dairy businessman bought much of it and had the buildings painted white with green shutters, and that tidy look survives around the church, library and the Rabbit Hill Inn. Autumn is a lovely time for a slow drive through town on Route 18.
