About the town
Brighton, Vermont.
Brighton is a lake and forest town in western Essex County. Its main village, Island Pond, sits at the north end of the lake that gives it its name, a pond with a wooded island in the middle. Routes 105 and 114 meet in the village, which has a compact downtown close to the water.
Summer brings swimming, boating and camping, including at Brighton State Park on neighboring Spectacle Pond, where loons call at night. In winter the local snowmobile club grooms about 130 miles of trails, and the village fills with sledders. Fun fact: the 1957 Rockefeller Center Christmas tree came from Brighton. Island Pond has a handful of diners and stores for refueling between adventures.
