About the town

Newport Town, Vermont.

The Town of Newport is a separate municipality from the City of Newport and lies along the city's western side. Most people know it as Newport Center, after its main village, which also gives the town its postal name. A smaller settlement, South Newport, sits in the southern part of town.

Newport Center grew up around an early sawmill on Mud Creek, and the town has stayed rural, with open farmland, wooded hills and wide views toward the mountains. The town was chartered in 1802, and the city split off from it in 1917. Today it makes a quiet base for exploring the northern Kingdom, with the lakefront, restaurants and shops of the city only a few minutes away in any season.
