About the town

Norton, Vermont.

Norton is a tiny Essex County town in the far northeast corner of Vermont, on the Canadian border just south of Stanhope, Quebec. Route 114 runs north through town from Norton Pond to the village of Norton, where a border crossing leads into Quebec.

The Coaticook River flows north out of Norton Pond and into Canada, following a wooded valley that glows with color in early fall. The pond has a public boat launch, and Black Turn Brook State Forest, along the Coaticook, is open for walking, snowshoeing, fishing and primitive camping. From 1970 to 1994 that land was the Earth Peoples Park, an open community anyone could join. With about 150 residents, Norton is a place for quiet scenery rather than dining.
