About the town

Canaan, Vermont.

Canaan is the far northeastern corner of Vermont, bordered by Quebec to the north and New Hampshire to the east, with two border crossings into Canada. The village of Beecher Falls sits where Halls Stream joins the Connecticut River and was long home to a large furniture factory, while Canaan village gathers around its green and Fletcher Park.

Many families here have Quebecois roots, and French is still spoken in some homes. The Alice M. Ward Library occupies an 1846 stagecoach inn listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Outdoors, there is fishing and paddling on the Connecticut River, plus hunting, hiking and snowmobiling in the surrounding forest. The town's calendar includes a moose festival and a fall festival.
