About the town

Barton, Vermont.

Barton is one of the larger towns in Orleans County, with two incorporated villages: Barton, set beside Crystal Lake, and Orleans, a few miles north along the Barton River. Interstate 91 and U.S. Route 5 pass through, making it an easy stop on the way to Newport or the Canadian border.

In summer, Crystal Lake State Park draws swimmers and paddlers to its beach, and each August the Orleans County Fair brings livestock, harness racing and midway rides to Barton, a tradition dating to 1867. The town also remembers the 1810 Runaway Pond flood that swept down the valley. The two village centers hold a good share of the area's shops and eateries.
