About the town

Newport City, Vermont.

Newport wraps around the southern end of Lake Memphremagog, the long border lake that stretches north into Quebec. It is the only city in Orleans County and the county seat, and the Clyde, Barton and Black rivers all empty into the lake here.

The city was formed in 1917 from the old village of Newport and the village of West Derby, and its compact downtown sits close to the water. A lakeside boardwalk and recreation path follow the shoreline, and Prouty Beach offers swimming, camping and views back across the bay to downtown. The old steamboat Lady of the Lake still appears on the city logo. Summer is prime time on the water, while fall color and snowy winters bring their own charm.
