About the town

Lowell, Vermont.

Lowell is the westernmost town in Orleans County, a hilly mix of farms and forest at the edge of the northern Green Mountains. Vermont Route 58 climbs west from the village toward Hazen's Notch, named for a military road that was surveyed toward Canada during the Revolutionary era and later abandoned there.

The town was first chartered as Kellyvale and grew on dairy farming and lumber. Today its ridgeline carries Kingdom Community Wind, the largest wind farm in Vermont, while the old asbestos quarry on Belvidere Mountain, the last such mine in the eastern United States, closed in 1993. The village center is small and quiet, so a visit here is best paired with a scenic drive and meals in neighboring towns.
