Martha's Diner
Coventry, Vermont $
The lowdown
A genuine 1953 dining car set beside Route 14 in Coventry village, run by the same family for decades (owner Kathy Holbrook bought it from her parents in 2002). It's a classic small-town diner - homemade donuts, muffins, breads and pies, big breakfasts and hot lunch plates like meat pie and meatloaf - and snowmobile and ATV trails come right to the door.

What people say
The word around town.
Regulars praise generous, homestyle cooking at low prices - the blueberry pancakes, homemade gravy and wheat toast, and pies come up often - and efficient service even during the Sunday rush. The only recurring complaint is that the small car gets hot inside.
